Rachel Muir

I am the VP of Training at Pursuant where I have the best job in the world – training people to be better fundraisers. I'm on a quest to elevate the donor experience with meaningful cultivation and I'm not afraid of truth bombs.

I live in my hometown of Austin, Texas, with my twins and husband, who works at the Texas School for the Blind. When I was 26, I launched Girlstart, a non-profit to empower girls in math, science, engineering and technology in the living room of my apartment with $500 and a credit card. Several years later I had raised over $10 million and was featured on Oprah, CNN, and the Today show.

My favorite storyteller is...

...the late Liz Carpenter, press spokeswoman for LBJ and Lady Bird Johnson to be the wisest, wittiest storyteller of all time. If you asked Liz how to tell a story she’d tell you “Have something to say.” No one could tell a better story, but she made you try. Liz hosted dinner parties at her home where you might find yourself seated between a governor, student, U.S. senator or masseuse, telling a story one by one around the table.

Liz was larger than life. She rehearsed her own funeral. She said “People always say the most complimentary things about a person at their funeral; I want to hear them first-hand.” Governor Ann Richards and Lily Tomlin spoke. Wearing white and dressed like an angel, Liz beamed center stage while three gospel choirs sang "How Great Thou Art". At her real funeral she wanted “Good press and glorious obituaries with some irreverent anecdotes about my life. I want open sobbing, not just a few wet eyes. And I want laughter along with tears.” She got it.
